Saturday Spotlight: Fall of Giants by Ken Follett...

October 9, 2010
I used to be a huge Ken Follett fan. I think I got hooked when I read On Wings of Eagles and then Lie Down with Lions, and I made my way through every single Follett book published in the 80's and early 90's. Then, there was a looooooooooong drought, until recently when the Mr. and I found Starz's production of The Pillars of the Earth. And I remembered that I loved Ken Follett's storytelling... So. Today's spotlight is on his newly-released first of a trilogy, Fall of Giants. I'm hoping it's as good as I want it to be!

fall of giants

Fall of Giants is a magnificent new historical epic. The first novel in the Century trilogy, it follows the fates of five interrelated families – American, German, Russian, English and Welsh – as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s suffrage.

Thirteen-year-old Billy Williams enters a man’s world in the Welsh mining pits…Gus Dewar, an American law student rejected in love, finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House…two orphaned Russian brothers, Grigori and Lev Peshkov, embark on radically different paths half a world apart when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription and revolution…Billy’s sister, Ethel, a housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts, takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with Walter von Ulrich, a spy at the German Embassy in London….

These characters and many others find their lives inextricably entangled as, in a saga of unfolding drama and intriguing complexity, Fall of Giants moves seamlessly from Washington to St. Petersburg, from the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty.

As always with Ken, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion. It is destined to be a new classic.

I got hooked on Ken Follett back when EYE OF THE NEEDLE was a bestseller. Recently I read one of his earlier (less successful) novels, PAPER MONEY, and thought it was exquisitely written.

If you mail a book to Follett he'll autograph it and mail it back. (That would make a nice giveaway, come to think of it.) He just autographed WORLD WITHOUT END for me.

I remember Eye of the Needle... :)

I didn't know he'd do that. I'll have to think of something. That would make a cool Christmas giveaway, wouldn't it? :) Hope you're doing well!

Hey Drey,
I was able to catch a little bit of Pillars of the Earth. It shows promise. I need to watch it straight through but I like it.

Spartacus is another Starz show that has promise but came up short in my opinion. I don't know if they will continue that show because the main actor has fallen ill.

Take care my friend.
Steve
